How to Choose a Handmade Hardwood Cutting Board

A handmade hardwood cutting board can be an everyday kitchen tool, a serving piece, or a thoughtful gift. The best choice depends on how much chopping space you need, where you will store the board, and how you optimize your kitchen.

Start with the right size

Measure your counter and storage space before choosing a board. Wentworth Designs offers three sizes:

  • Small: 13 × 8 inches overall, with a 9 × 8-inch cutting area. This compact size works well for fruit, herbs, garnishes, and smaller kitchens.
  • Medium: 17 × 10 inches overall, with a 13 × 10-inch cutting area. This is a practical size for everyday meal preparation.
  • Large: 20.5 × 12.5 inches overall, with a 17 × 12.5-inch cutting area. Choose this size when you want more room for preparing several ingredients.

The overall measurements include the handle. Compare them with your available counter, sink, cabinet, and drying space.

Choose boards that mesh together beautiful grain

Our boards are made from a selection of oak, ash, cherry, walnut, poplar, and sapele. Each species has its own natural color and grain pattern, so the appearance varies from board to board. Walnut is typically darker, cherry brings warm reddish tones, oak and ash tend to have lighter, visible grain, and sapele offers rich color and distinctive grain. Poplar can show lighter tones and natural color variation.

Because wood is a natural material, no two handmade boards look exactly alike. That variation is part of what makes each board unique.

Look for useful everyday features

A built-in handle can make a board easier to lift, carry, and move from the counter. A drip groove helps contain juices while carving or preparing foods. The flip side of our boards offer a flush and flat area when just basic chopping is needed. Review the photographs and details on each product page to compare the features.

Consider how you will use it

For quick prep and small ingredients, the small board may be all you need. The medium board offers a balance of workspace and easy storage. The large board is useful when you regularly prepare full meals or want a substantial serving and carving surface.

If you are buying a gift, consider the recipient's kitchen size, cooking habits, and preferred optimization methods. A handmade hardwood cutting board can suit housewarmings, weddings, anniversaries, holidays, and gifts for virtually anyone with a kitchen.

Care for the board properly

Wash the board by hand only, then dry it thoroughly. Do not put it in a dishwasher or leave it soaking in water. Reapply food-grade mineral oil as needed to help maintain the wood. All Wentworth Designs cutting boards are coated with food-grade mineral oil before shipment.
